Home decor styling tips

Make your home a source of pride and not just your comfortable abode. Let your sense of style, colour and coordination work its magic on the things big and small that can make a difference to your home! As impressive as you work to make the exteriors with landscaping, garden ornaments and a pristine driveway, you can do the same for the interiors too. There are several home decoration items online in India that you can choose from and make your home as good as, or even better, than the designer homes that feature in classy magazines.

• Pay attention to the corners of your home. While you may have grand furniture taking up the lion’s share of the rooms of the house, the side accessories accentuate the positive aspects of this furniture. Team up your walnut cabinet with silver inlays with a silver bookend in the shape of an owl. Bring out the deep rose tones of the embedded velvet pads of your sofa using tall, wooden vases with deep red lilies.

• Artistic use of lamps, candles, lampshades and candelabras add a touch of purity and glamour to your room. Using bright artificial light is not always the answer in the room. Make a special, intimate occasion with your friends and family even more close-knit with light from the well-placed candles and lampshades. When placed inside attractive cases like t-lite cases of glass or lampshades of clay or mud hand-painted in with various patterns, you achieve this romantic setting while you also have decorative pieces in your house always.

• Trays, platters and bowls of various sizes and shapes and of different depths are also very popular accessory choices. You can stick to the conventional bowls in wood or metal with carving and inlays of ivory or ebony in them. Or you can experiment with glass and crystal platters, those shaped as a leaf or a sea shell or the tiered platters too. These are useful and highly decorative home accessories that can be placed in corners or also atop tables or cabinets.

• Make your rooms and furniture more comfortable with the use of plush, velvet cushions. You have the traditional round or oblong ones or you can experiment with the other shaped cushions. Young couples with kids can give multiple cushions for their children shaped as cartoon or animal characters. If you are a hugger and like snoozing in front of your suspended, large screen LED TV, then sprawl on the warm rug while you hug a round cushion draped in silk and with perfectly rounded edges while you sip on a cup of hot chocolate. Cushions covered in silk or velvet with prints or weaves in various motifs – traditional North and South Indian prints, Mughal or Arabic prints, prints from our Oriental neighbors, abstracts or even regal-looking crests or coats of arms – are highly popular now-a-days.

• Random accessories such as a large, ornate key in gleaming copper, or a door stop in porcelain in the shape of a cow’s head, a Chinese silkscreen, or a small statuette of a fluid animal such as a jaguar or cheetah that acts as a paperweight or an amoebic shaped crystal platter with an assortment of beads and sea shells – these add a modern touch to the room and can be highly effective for people who like bold colours and interesting patterns.

With so many options available for home décor, you can think-out-of-the-box and move away from traditional faux flowers to pamper your abode with something new and hatke. Let you style and choice of shapes and colours extend your uniqueness to your home too!
